P.M. Akin Elementary School opened in 1988. The school's name recognizes P.M. (Maurice) Akin, a former principal of Hartman Elementary.
Mr. Akin was born in 1912 and graduated from East Texas State Teachers College. He began his career teaching in Parker and Princeton communities. He moved to Wylie in 1941 and taught speech and history at the high school. He was named principal at R.F. Hartman in 1956, a position he held until 1975.
Mr. Akin died May 21, 1981. He and his wife, Irene, had four sons, Michael, David, Stephen and Paul.
Attendance is the first step in student achievement. Missing a day of school is a missed opportunity for your child to learn, have fun with their friends, and see their teachers.
If your child is absent, you will receive an absence notification. A parent's or doctor’s note will be required when a child returns to school.

Walkers
Front and rear doors are open for students to enter the building.
Buses
No parent traffic in the rear loop during arrival and dismissal times.
Carpool
Please pull forward to the front most cone. Staff or students will open the door for your child(ren). Students will enter through the front doors. If you would like to get out of your vehicle, please park in the front parking lot, help your child out of the car, and walk them to the front door (using the crosswalk). Staff will help you safely cross at the crosswalk.
Dismissal
Please do not park along Lanwood during dismissal for the safety of students both on the bus and walking from school.
Walkers
Backdoor walkers will cross at Foxwood and Lanwood. Parents, if you are meeting your child, please wait on the other side of Lanwood to help us cross all students safely and keep track of how students are going home.
Front door walkers will cross at Springwood and W.A. Allen. Parents, if you are meeting your child, please wait on the other side of W.A. Allen if you are coming from the direction. This helps us cross all students safely and keep track of how students are going home.
Carpool
To join the line, please turn onto Springwood from W.A. Allen and have your car tag visible.A staff member will be on the corner holding up a number matching the cone your child will be waiting at. If you join the line any other way, your child will not be called. This messes up our system.
In the event your child is at the wrong cone, please pull forward to the next numbered cone and your child will be sent there. This keeps the line moving smoothly.
There is not parent traffic allowed in the rear of the school during dismissal time.
